FOTD with coastal scents, tarte & beautyblender (+ reviews)

19 Mar

I received my mini Sephora order the other day and had to share two of the products..

Sephora haul

The beautyblender sponge ($25 for 2pack)beautyblender review + FOTD

Here is the beautyblender right out of the package (the indent went away) Looks like a normal, basic sponge, right? Why would anyone pay $20 for a sponge? well, I understand why now.

You can use it dry or wet, but its super easy to wet it, run it under water for a second and squeeze it, it’s like magic. It kind of inflates (but isn’t even noticeably wet) You place your liquid foundation spotted around on your face, then just dab/pounce the large end of the beauty blender all around your face. When you wet it, it doesn’t soak up and waste much of your foundation, as most sponges would do.

It applies foundation flawlessly, I understand what the craze with this product is about now.  Additionally, you use the pointy end to bounce in concealer. It shapes perfectly around your eyes/nose/t-zone area. Great product, and I would totally recommend it. I was also skeptical about paying $20 for a sponge, but this is a staple in my makeup, and has amazingly put my tarte airbrush finish foundation brush to the side for awhile.

The other stand-out product I received was the:

Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse ($28)

Amazonian clay waterproof brow mousse -

I have sparse brows, that just won’t grow, so I’ve tried many products to help fill and shape them. So many eyebrow pencils/fillers are just the wrong color, don’t last, or just don’t look natural, but I think I’ve found a great thing in this product.

I order Taupe (a natural blonde color) and it blends nicely, I enjoy the mousse formula, it lasts and helps shape my brows. The brush is really handy because it both combs and has the brush end.

In the photos below I’ve used both the beauty blender & Tarte emphasEYESbeautyblender review & purple eye FOTDAdditional Products:

11 Mar Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie & Nike In Season TR

Monday in a nutshell – work | kickboxing | teen mom 2

Monday in depth: I’m in week three of my new graphic design/marketing job and I won the lottery with my boss. I work closely with her and she is pretty awesome, just to show her appreciation she sent me a $50 Sephora gift card this weekend. At lunch today, I decided I have absolutely no control when it comes to bread or pasta. Seriously, I cannot stop eating if you put either in front of me, until the point I can barely move. And that’s a pretty sad thing considering all of this juicing I’ve been trying to do, but I have no idea how to control it.

Anyway, I came home from work and my new shoes had come in..

Image

Nike Women’s In-Season TR 2 Training Shoe. I figured I’d been wearing my Nike Free Run’s so much, that I should invest in another pair. I was looking into Brooks but once I tried these on, and the built in memory foam cushion, I was sold. They’re not the most attractive shoe, but they do what they need to. The tongue is attached to the side of the shoe, so it doesn’t slide all around during exercise. Obviously tonight was the first workout I’ve used them on, but I feel like they will break in nicely and are very light.

Since I ate so much bread and crap today, I decided to give my juicer a break and bust out the Ninja Mega Kitchen again.

Strawberry-Banana-Oatmeal smoothie

  • one carton of fresh/frozen strawberries
  • two very ripe bananas
  • 3/4 cup of old fashioned oats
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed (estimated)
  • 1 tbsp wheat germ (estimated)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (estimated)
  • ice cubes if not using frozen fruit
  • almond milk
  • It was a little bland, so I dumped some frozen mixed fruit into it (grapes/peaches/cherries/mango)

So I put in my Sephora order, to use the gift card, and I tried to control myself and not spend higher than $50.00, I purposely didn’t let myself buy anymore basics, like mascara/foundation/lipsticks, so I went with the beautyblender I’ve heard so much about and the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse. Then I just threw some random sale items into my cart, used a code for a free deluxe sample of Peter Thomas Roth FirmX and the usual three free samples. Can’t wait for it to come in, and I’ll be sure to review them.

Are you familiar with Shopathome.com?
http://www.shopathome.com/?IAFCG=ClhCf71t2c4iN80QdI7jSA==

Basically, every time you shop online, you earn a certain percent of cash back, which you will receive in a check. I signed up (free) in November and have gotten a check for $75 so far, which really added up during Christmas shopping. If you do a lot of shopping online, you should probably sign up, it’s completely legit and free (and I can understand while writing this how it could sound like a gimmick)

For example, I bought my shoes at Finish Line and got 6% cash back of my $70 total. With my sephora order I got 8% cash back on my $66 order. Some stores offer 12% cash back, etc, It definitely adds up.

Ps. I would not be promoting this if I hadn’t already received and cashed checks from the company. They are the same kind of program as Ebates.com, but I’ve found ShopatHome.com offers higher cash back and will match 110%. If my explanation was confusing, feel free to ask.

Sweet Potato Blend Juice Recipe + Benefits

6 Mar

So I’ve had my juicer for a few weeks now, and I’m slowly trying to work my way up to a cleanse. I’m drinking at least one juice (generally green) a day, sometimes two or three. Today was my first attempt at having a juice in place of my dinner. I wanted pasta soooo bad, but I decided upon a ‘pretty’ juice, rather than a drab green/brown juice.

Sweet Potato Juice Blend

Sweet Potato Blend Juice Recipe

Sweet Potato, you ask? I was skeptical, but figured I had to give it a shot, because I wanted a radient colored juice (and had one to get rid of)

Juicing Recipe: Sweet Potato | Carrot | Grapefruit | Pineapple

  • 1/4 Pineapple (leftover from the delicious Pineapple-Strawberry Juice I made yesterday)
  • 4 carrots (washed, dirty end chopped off)
  • grapefruit (or oranges)
  • large sweet potato (peeled)

BENEFITS

  • Sweet potatoes are extremely rich in carotenes and an excellent source of vitamins C, B2, B6, E and biotin (B7). They are very low is sugar and a good blood regulator.

They provide good amounts of manganese, folate (folic acid), copper and iron.  It also has pantothenic acid and is rich in dietary fiber.

  • Carrots are known for beta carotene which gives the body Vitamin A, B Vitamins, Vitamin E and many minerals. It is effective at reducing mucous from your ears, nose and throat, and clearing away phlegm that can interfere with breathing, according to juicing-for-health.com. Sinusitis, nasal congestion and other similar problems can all be helped by drinking carrot juice.
  • Grapefruit doesn’t only contain vitamin C which is commonly known to be protective against cold or flu.  It is not just one nutrient that helps prevent a certain disease, but rather the combination of several ingredients in it that does the trick.  This is the kind of nutritional power that we can find only in the way God makes our natural food. This juicy fruit contains citric acid, natural sugars, essential oils like limonene, pinene and citral.  It has high amounts of vitamin C, and smaller amounts of vitamin A, B complex, E and K.

  • Pineapple contains vitamin C, Thiamine, vitamin B6, Manganese, Potassium, and Magnesium. You can gain as much as 75% of the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C which is vital to increasing the body’s natural resistance to disease and in promoting cell growth and development which aids tissue repair

Pineapples also contain bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme that helps us to digest protein, prevent blood clot formation, and aids us as ananti-inflammatory to help reduce swelling, arthritis, and numerous other issues. (source)

Juicing carrots in the Omega Juicer

I love juicing carrots, they are such a bright, uplifting color (does that make me weird?)
I was too excited when I got the juicer, that I didn’t bother to read the directions. After a few juices, I realized they had more pulp than I would assume they should, so I looked through my box and found this (below) handy little strainer thing you put above the juice bowl. It double strains all of the pulp, so happy I found that, one day I’ll actually read the directions. I still haven’t even read the directions to my Ninja >_<

And now I’m just enjoying this Beta Ceratine packed juice. yum.

Sweet Potato Blend Juice Recipe

I also stocked up on a lot of greens.. This morning I had

  • cucumber
  • carrots
  • kale
  • spinach
  • lemon
  • apple

I wasn’t expecting much, but it was really good. I haven’t had a terrible juice yet, and for the most part I just dump stuff into the juicer.

Healthy Blueberry Strawberry Pancakes

I really wish I could remember where I got this recipe, I had the tab open to link to it, then Chrome closed unexpectedly. But I still wanted to share…

Healthier Strawberry Blueberry Pancakes:

  • 1 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 c. rolled oats
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg white
  • 3 tsp melted butter (I should have used more)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 c. frozen or fresh blueberries
  • cooking spray or a small pat of butter
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt to combine. In another medium bowl, mash the banana into a paste, then beat in the egg, buttermilk, and almond extract to combine. Add the wet mixture to the flour mixture, and stir until evenly mixed.
  2. Spray a large skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium-low heat, or melt butter in skillet over medium-low heat. Make pancakes using 1/3 c. batter each. Top each pancake with a few berries. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the batter is bubbling on the top of the pancake and the bottom is golden brown, then flip and cook for 3-4 minutes on the other side. Repeat until batter is gone. Serve warm with extra berries and maple syrup. Place any extra cooked pancakes in plastic bags and refrigerate to store.

I made the blueberry sauce by putting frozen blueberries over the stove with some sugar (tried to keep it at a minimum, considering this was supposed to be dominantly healthy) and topped it off with a dollop of greek yogurt.

DIY: custom craft beer gift basket for valentines day + Cardstore.com

13 Feb

I wanted to give my valentine something thoughtful for the occasion, after some consideration I decided on a type of gift basket. I knew I was going to fill the basket with the traditional chocolate candies, beef jerky, some 5 hour energy which he’s always stealing from me, Mio (which he ran out of recently) and lotto.

This things listed above were all more of a filler, so I chose to hand select craft and local beers for him to try out. The kind you can’t just order up at most bars. I personally love craft beer, and he’s a bit more simple, so this was a perfect opportunity for him to expand his taste. He likes cider and lighter fruit based beers, so I went with that and a nice large bottle of La Fin Du Monde (not pictured)

I found the crate at Michaels, I love it, I want to buy 10 of them, paint, and hang them on my wall to hold decorations.

The card is from www.Cardstore.com, I order a lot of cards from there and I’m always really happy with them. The photo quality is good enough for me, they are extremely reasonably priced, and you can even get them delivered straight to the recipient with an addressed envelope, return address, and stamp included in the low price of less than a stamp for everything! They have so many holiday and random card designs, and I love a lot of the designs (as a graphic design major.)

Overall, I’m really happy with his gift set. I taped on little felt hearts to some of the bottles and watched a tutorial to create that red bow. I used some old boxes to prop up the smaller stuff.
And most of all, he loved it, it’s a great thoughtful gift.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries for V-day

12 Feb

I’m no baker, but I’ve taken a big enjoyment in being in the kitchen and learning to cook lately. I literally knew nothing about cooking a year ago, and I mean nothing. I started from ground zero, I used to eat fast food three times a day or grab something out of the freezer and throw it in the microwave.

So today I attempted chocolate covered strawberries. Having too much time on my hands, I initially was going to order Edible Arrangements or something of the sort for my Valentine, but decided, “let’s give this a shot…”

Chocolate / Vanilla Covered Strawberries:

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Tutorial

I wasn’t sure if these “Candy Melts” were just more of a marketing ploy, and basically the same and just buying chocolates, but I decided to try one of each. I will totally go with the Candy Melts next time, they hardened up way faster than the chocolate chips, and were just a lot easier to work with.

Microwave the chips for 1 minute, then stir every 30 seconds. nom nom. Vanilla Covered Strawberries Tutorial

Dip the strawberries into the chocolate, simple as that…
The stems on my strawberries kept breaking off and that proved to be quite a hassle, but I worked through it 😉

I added some shredded coconut, sprinkles, or a drizzle of the opposite chocolate, keeping with the pink/v-day theme:Chocolate Covered Strawberries TutorialChocolate Covered Strawberries TutorialChocolate Covered Strawberries TutorialChocolate Covered Strawberries Tutorial

These were a lot of fun to make and much easier than expected, plus he loved them.

Juicing with a Ninja Blender {grapefruit-apple-carrot juice}

1 Feb

I’m obviously on a smoothie kick, and I’m always jealous of everyone with their delicious juicing recipes. I have the Ninja Mega Kitchen 1500 which claims to be able to juice. After some research, and watching a few youtube videos, I gave ‘juicing in a blender with a cheesecloth’ a shot.

juicing with a ninja blender

What I used (aka what I had available)

  • one grapefruit – peeled
  • one apple – cored
  • two celery stalks (which proved to be one too many)
  • four asparagus spears (don’t ask)
  • two large carrots
  • a few romaine lettuce scraps (i’m all out of spinach and kale)
  • a cup of water
  • I forgot ice, so let’s add that here.

juicing with a ninja 1500juicing with a ninja 1500juicing with a ninja 1500 mega kitchen

after two quick pulses, everything is chopped

then I left it on button 3 ‘crush’…

juicing with a ninja 1500 mega kitchen

So the next step after blending everything was to cover the top of the blender with the cheese cloth or painter strainer bag and pour over a bowl, once the liquid stops draining dump the cheesecloth and remains into the bowl so you can pick them up to strain them in the cheesecloth by squeezing. The reason I missed photos on this step is because my cheesecloth was too short on one end and didn’t hold all of the contents, creating a mess. but I handled it and just had to scoop some out, and ended up with this..

juicing with a ninja mega kitchen 1500

Overall, the juice is tasty. It would have been much better with less celery and the addition of ice. I’ll definitely be trying this more often, and each time will probably bring me closer to purchasing an actual juicer.

In the meantime, if you have any delicious juicing recipes to share, I’d love to hear them and try them out!
